Sasol Mining operates six coal mines that supply feedstock for our Southern African integrated value chain. The coal supplied to Secunda Synfuels Operations (SSO) is mainly used as gasification feedstock and some is used to generate electricity. The coal supplied to Sasolburg Operations (SO) is used to generate electricity and steam. We also export coal from the Twistdraai Export Plant to international power generation customers via the Richards Bay Coal Terminal.


  • Interpret group and BU strategy and develop technology strategy and technology development objectives (TDOs)
  • Manage R&D activities, ensure technology development in line with BU strategy, and drive technology readiness approval process
  • Provide support to projects / owners in terms of technology selection and transferring the technology into the project
  • Act as entry point for relevant BUs, including for owner and operations support as well as applications research support
  • Own relationship with external technology providers (development partnerships)

    • Drive development of balanced set of TDOs for short, medium and long term
    • Ensure IP strategy matches technology strategy.
    • Provide input into portfolio planning / management

    • Take part in R&D stage gate process
    • Drive tech. development and RFI process
    • Obtain RFI from Early Engineering group
    • Responsible for technology governance forums
  • External relations & reporting
    • Evaluate and coordinate approval of material technology related external communication
    • Foster and maintain relationships and network of key external technology partners
  • Performance Management
    • External relations & reporting
    • Liaise & align with BUs to drive development of tech. strategy and individual technologies
    • Coordinate development and communication of technical progress reports
    • Assist capital project technology selection
    • Ensure line of sight on relevant market trends and developments in the technology area
    • Entry point for owner/ops support requests as well as applications research support

Minimum Qualifications and Experience Required

  • University Bachelor?s Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical or Electronics)
  • Preferably a post graduate degree in engineering management or technology management
  • Typically 5 years relevant experience
